Bailey is 75% Malinois. I had this test kit sitting on my desk for months back in Virginia and it had spent a few months before that on the kitchen island. I didn't want to pack it and really didn't want to throw it away, so finally, the day before we left, I swabbed her cheeks and sent in the sample. The results came back in an email yesterday:
We detected 7 breeds in Bailey’s DNA.
Top 5 Breeds
- 75% Belgian Malinois
- 13% German Shepherd Dog
- 7% American Pit Bull Terrier
- 2% Chow Chow
- 1% American Staffordshire Terrier
This comes as no surprise. I thought she was a mixed breed but primarily Malinois and the results bore that out. I'm happy that the largest bit of "other" was German Shepherd Dog because, obviously. The remaining bits are not really significant. The test also scanned for a genetic predisposition for 30 different diseases and found none.
The test showed that she was likely to have erect ears (she has one full-time, and a second one on occasion), and a long snout, which she does. Behaviorally, it showed that she was more likely than most to cross her paws (she does).
The family tree showed that most all of her ancestors had been Malinois, but one great grand parent on each side had the German Shepherd Mix component.
All very interesting but as I said, not really surprising. Bailey and I did our daily hike at the Citadel this morning (Saturday). She had a long nap in the afternoon while Clay and I went off to check out another potential apartment and then we walked to the Beaux Arts Museum, where we saw just a very small part of a pretty incredible collection. We have a local museum pass that gets us into a lot of local museums for free for a year so we don't have to try to see everything in just one visit.
Fascinating. Whatever Bailey is, she's a beauty.
