Sitting around indoors on a wet and gloomy day wasn't doing anything for Della's disposition, or mine. It wasn't really raining this afternoon so I took Della on a two miler up at Pleasant Grove. I think it helped us both. She perked up when we got to an area where we've often spotted rabbits, and she really perked up when she was convinced we needed to dive into a thicket of sticker bushes and mud where she had heard or seen something move. In between those events there were lots of people arriving and kids to watch as soccer season is getting underway. She does not approve of human puppies running around seemingly unsupervised. I tried to explain that there were some parents around, and they were old enough, but she kept her puppies safely confined to Daneland and she thinks human parents are simply negligent.
I fed everyone when we got home, did some more work, and we headed up to Patch to help Clay close. The crowd was gone by the time we arrived, but Della checked the place out and had several treats.
I can't say what effect Serena's death will have on Della in the long run. Will she find another friend? If so, we'll have to adopt whoever it is. Maybe she will just become more sociable with the fosters? Or perhaps she will just concentrate on her work as farm dog? We'll see.
