Oakley is about 10 months old, a female Great Dane, recently spayed. She came into rescue from a young woman who lost her job and her home. She was adopted out, briefly, but is back here today looking for the perfect home for a young, energetic, playful, very sweet Dane.
She was a bit rattled and confused at first, but within an hour or two she got acquainted with the dogs and the routine around here. Her tail came up and her personality came out. I was sitting at my desk chair working and she walked up behind and put her head on shoulder. I've kept her indoors today because she was just spayed a few days ago, and it was cold outside. Apparently she's had some diarrhea so I gave her just a small meal this evening and an Imodium. She's hungry though, so we'll start back on more serious food tomorrow.
She met Maya first, then Paisley and Elvis, and Candace. Then it was Della's turn and we had no problems with anyone. Della has learned that we foster dogs around here, she's really quite good with newcomers. I had Bailey and Dodger out in Daneland today to play so they didn't come in until evening. This is the first new dog to come in since Bailey and she greeted the much larger Oakley with fur up and full of attitude. I was on top of that though so nothing got out of hand. Oakley was wanting to play with Bailey and they made a few starts but Bailey needs to get used to the idea of her being around here first. I think they will make excellent playmates but Bailey needs a little time to adjust and Oakley is still just three days post-surgery, so we'll take it slow and easy for a couple of days.
Bailey needs to learn that her position as my baby girl is not threatened by new dogs coming in. That's just one of many things she still needs to learn.
Oakley seems like a wonderful dog and she's ready for a home where everyone in the home will be dedicated to her and give her time to settle in. I really don't think that's too much to ask and I don't think it will take this girl very long from what I've seen today.
