The Buddy System

I generally try to work the buddy system with dogs around here. There's too little of me to go around to give each dog individual attention and exercise every day. Some dogs need it more than others, of course, and some dogs do need some one-on-one time and attention, but I generally try to work in groups of at least two.

Some dogs are very versatile. Maya will walk with most anyone. Della will too, which is good because those two need the most from me.

Deer have been spotted.

I generally have Theo paired up with Max, which maybe isn't fair to Theo, but they both speak shepherd and like to do the stupid barking play with each other and with the Danes on the opposite side of a fence. Theo gets some one-on-one time when we play ball, however, and that's his greatest joy in life.

Look at that wet and muddy belly on Max. He comes into the house every night
where the mud dries and the dirt then falls off. "Clean" is a constantly moving target around here.

Della and Serena are a pretty solid and consistent pair. Della doesn't really play with any other dog. Serena will play with others, but Della only plays with Serena. I'm pretty sure that Serena was a big part of the reason that Della decided to live with us.

The play can look ferocious, and you don't want to be in the middle of it, but it is just play.

The two new boys make another natural pair. I'm not committed to adopting them out together, but if it happens that way it would be fine. Winston is a bit overbearing and I'm not sure Chase has had the opportunity to be his own dog. Still, they get along well and being together is providing one element of stability and consistency for them right now.

Chase (the harlequin in back) and Winston (the merle mantle in front).

I have taken all four Danes out together on a couple of occasions, but the girls really don't want anything to do with the boys just yet. They are aware that the boys are intact and the girls simply have no interest in that. To their credit, the boys are not pushy, but still, I think they will have a better chance at interesting the girls in play after they are neutered.

Della simply sat down when Chase tried to sniff her, making it clear that she was off limits.

I just love this picture of Della.
