Days of wine and puppies

I just learned about them yesterday, a litter of six husky(mix?) puppies, that may or may not be coming our way. I didn't know for sure until 3:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon that they would be arriving at 4:30 p.m. I did a quick sweep up of the dirt in the puppy palace and then headed over to pick them up. The pups were getting a dose of parvo/distemper vaccine and a de-wormer when I arrived.

Clay has been essentially non-ambulatory since having surgery to repair torn tendons in his left foot on Friday, so I enlisted neighbors Jan and Paul to come over and help with preparations. We got the space cleaned up, stocked the shelves with blankets, and set up an exercise pen as a barrier. After putting down some bedding, a few toys, and a water source, we left the pups alone because they were all exhausted. I'll go back out to feed this evening.

They are 4-5 weeks old, rescued by Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge, along with one adult male dog who may or may not be the father of one or more of the pups. It's too soon to be separated from mom, but apparently they had begun eating solid food. It wasn't possible to get the mother and the decision was made to take the pups when the opportunity presented itself and I think that was the way to go. I'll make them mush with replacement milk and dry food in the blender and we'll just do the best we can. We had the Dane pups eating mush by this time anyway.

There are six puppies, one male and five females. We are going with wine names. The boy is Merlot. The girls are Riseling, Chardonnay, Chablis, Pinot, and Moscato.

The dark one smooshed up against the wall on the left is the only boy, Merlot.
Continuing left to right in front are: Riesling, Moscato, and Pinot.
The two white fluffs in back are Chardonnay and Chablis.

This is one of the white fluffs, either Chardonnay or Chablis.
One weighs more than the other but until we have collars, it's arbitrary.

This is Moscato, already Erika's favorite.

I'm going to say this is Riesling.

Merlot has a very grumpy look on his face.
Maybe because he's the only boy.

The light brown pup with the stripe down her forehead is Pinot.

Another white fluffer.

Cute pic, giving me a kiss.

Della went along when I picked up the puppies.

This is the male who was also surrendered today,
a possible candidate for the father.

Sly greeting the pups when we got home.

Maya checking them out as well.

Paisley sticking her head in to check out the puppies.

Jan with puppy.

Jan and Paul after we had everything cleaned and set up.

First meal in their new quarters.
