Welcome Coco

I don't usually pay much attention to the multitude of Facebook posts looking for someone to save this, that, or the other dog. That sounds callous, but many of them are from halfway across the country, or farther, and I've always sort of subscribed to the belief that rescue begins at home. I've taken dogs from out of state, but generally speaking you don't have to travel far to find a deserving dog in need.

This particular post was in a Facebook group that posts local lost and found dogs. This wasn't a lost or found dog, but it was someone trying to help a chained dog, not her own, find a better life. The woman who posted the pictures of Coco knew the owner and had gotten the owner to agree to give up the dog. Coco is a young dog, 2-3 years old we were told, who was just kept outside on a chain with little attention or interaction. She's vaguely shepherd looking, erect ears, pointed snout, and a bright look. She's cute, small (maybe 35 pounds?) and potentially very adoptable.

We met at the Fluvanna dog park this morning and Coco came home with me. She's not spayed yet and has no history of vaccines so we'll be going to the vet this next week. She's scared of people, me included, but we'll get over that. She's good with dogs, in fact she was having the time of her life at the dog park; I hated to make her leave there this morning. She's never lived indoors or been crated, but we introduced her to a crate in the afternoon when we went out and she was fine. Female dogs house train easily, so I don't anticipate a problem there.

She will be adopted through Promises Animal Rescue after we get her spayed and vaccinated. She will make someone a very fine and playful companion.
