Della is a farm dog at heart. She loves nothing more than being outside and protecting her territory from invading critters and joggers who dare to use our road.
Serena has an even bigger bark than Della but she misses out on most of the guarding opportunities because she's indoors napping. Serena's adventures outdoors are short lived and generally involve eating or eliminating. She's not one to just lay in the sun like Della does.
Della was outside late this afternoon and spotted a jogger. I spotted her from the upstairs window and came down to call her off. (She's totally confined within our fenced yard, but I still don't like my dogs barking at people who go down the street.)
Della came in afterwards quite proud of herself and she must have been bragging about the great jogger chase to Serena. In the evening when I took both the big girls outside Serena ran out front and barked, but she had nothing to bark at. She proceeded to look for something and finally just pretended something was there because she wanted to hear her own very impressive voice and join in, even if belatedly, the great jogger chase off. Della told her it was all over and the two girls just played a while before they came in.
Serena is an impressive and imposing figure. |
