Catching up

Last week was hectic with dog stuff and work.  I'm hoping this one will be a bit quieter.  Catching up on some email news:
Tasha went back to her Thanksgiving foster home over the Christmas/New Year/Kwanza/Festivus holidays and she is there still.  It sounds like she's staying indefinitely, assuming that she, Sable, Bernie, and Murphy all get along and are manageable together.  That's very good news.

Sam is a senior black lab who was taken in by the folks who had adopted Harry from me years ago.  It seems that they've recently discovered that Sam knows the word "dance" and will do so on command.  With music playing, "let's dance" gets Sam to stand on his hind legs, put his front legs on your chest, and smile and sway to the music.  That's one I'd like to see on video.

Tessa the beautiful is settling into her new home.  She's learning the rules of the household, some basic manners that she was lacking, and she's learned about cats.  She has brought her new household back to life after the loss of her predecessor and everyone is happy.  She loves to run, in their backyard and also at the dog park.  This dog has it made.

Stoney and Daphne are with us one more day.  They've been fun to have around and provide a constant reminder that a round up of rottweilers is easier to handle than a shitload of shepherds.  You do, however, need extra hands for all the petting they require.

I had an email recently from the woman who adopted Boomer, now called Hans.  She has been great for him.  He was painfully thin all the time I had him and his prior owner said he had always been so.  She now has him on a special diet and an enzyme supplement and he has put on 10 pounds!  He was always ball crazy, but apparently he has lost his interest in the ball, or at least his obsession with it.  He has gotten rather possessive and protective of his new owner in relation to other dogs, but who could blame him?  He has a good thing going.

I just received a note on Facebook from Rocky's new home.  Rocky is the miracle dog turned therapy dog, now residing in Utah. He just started his new gig working with children.  He gave everyone kisses and Shayna said that the staff were as thrilled as the kids to have him there.

And finally, there is my most recent foster turned therapy dog, Buck, now called Robin.  He is now with Service Dogs of Virginia.  He's living with one of their foster homes getting worldly experience, but he seems to be handling everything they throw at him.  He will then come back to the center for some intensive training before being placed in a home with an autistic child.

We may think we are primarily rescuing dogs, but I'm always heartened by how many human lives are also enriched by these adoptions.

There's a manager where I work who told me his one child had mental issues. The doctor told him to get the kid a dog so he did! He said it did wonders for his son. I wish there were more doctors like that and more parents who would listen to the uncommon suggestions! Dogs truly do enrich our lives.
