Fretting over Della

Della woke me up about 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. She could have been the first to wish me happy birthday, but she actually just wanted to go outside, and I assumed she wanted to eat. I let her out as usual and went to prepare her food, probably the 8th meal in a 24 hour period. She didn't eat, however, and even more surprising, she refused to come back upstairs with me.

I was up for the rest of the night but she slept downstairs in the kitchen. It was close to dawn when I woke up Clay and we took her temperature, an alarming 106 degrees. I waited a little while longer before contacting Erika and in the meantime fed all the other dogs. Della was up and interested when all the other dogs came down and much to my surprise she then wanted to eat. She was acting pretty much normally, and after eating she even came upstairs on her own and willingly fed the puppies, something that she had been reluctant to do yesterday. Her temperature has come down but it's still above normal, about 104 degrees.

This started an hourly monitoring of Della's temperature throughout the day. Erika made numerous contacts with the vet's office but we were told to just monitor her and to focus more on her behavior than the numbers on the thermometer. That's hard to do, but she has been more or less "normal" all day, eating every couple of hours and drinking plenty of water, more than usual I'd say. She's also been nursing the pups more than she did yesterday.

The puppies have really been discovering their voices and are not at all shy about using them. They have also become a lot more active and are playing with each other now, or learning to at least. It's fun to see, but we all need Della to be well.

UPDATE: Wednesday evening, Della is feeling perkier, looking more like her normal self, and her temp is down. Best birthday gift ever.

These outdoor pics were taken Tuesday evening.
This is Della and Max.

The activity and noise levels have hit new highs, but they
are still sleeping or nursing most of the time.

The pups look like actual dogs now. I'm glad that Della is doing better.
Happy Birthday you.
