Lily's Adoption Day

Lily and I drove up to northern Virginia yesterday. She went to a new home and I came home alone, but with my van stuffed full of dog food. I had to get there an hour early to meet the adopters and stay a bit longer than usual to actually send her home with them, but it worked out.

It was Lily's first and only adoption event. She was just as sweet and friendly with everyone there as she has been around here. She greets everyone, human and canine, by wagging her tail and wriggling her butt, while offering a kiss with her sweet, smiling face. Seriously, she was good. She worked the crowd even after she no longer needed to do so. She was good with all the people she met, all the dogs, even kids. She genuinely likes people for some reason, even people she doesn't know.

The adopters brought their other dog, also an adoptee from Promises, and the two girls got along great. We walked around back behind the store where there's a little grass. The shopping center is adjacent to a golf course and while we were back there at least three golf carts came by. One was driven by a woman who worked for the golf course and she stopped to say hello. Lily jumped up onto the golf cart to greet the lady and would have been happy to ride off with her. After the adopters left for another appointment, a second couple showed up who were also interested in adopting Lily, especially after they met her. I didn't want to spend the whole time disappointing people by telling them that Lily was spoken for, so we went off on an errand to enjoy some air conditioning on the hot and humid day.

The woman who brings me dog food arrived with her car weighed down with many, many bags of dry dog food. About the time we finished transferring it to my van, Lily's adopters returned to take her home.

We are down to just six dogs now, five of our own: Theo, Max, Trooper, Maya, and Serena; and one foster, Smokey. I doubt that we'll stay at six for long, but it's nice right now. I need to start giving Smokey a lot more time and attention and work on finding him a home, but today I need to do some things around the house and yard.

It was undoubtedly Lily's first experience in a
suburban shopping center, but nothing phased her.
She even hopped up onto the golf cart like she
did it everyday.

The two girls even shared the water bowl at
the same time without any problem.
