I got back from Kansas Monday evening about 9:00 p.m. and arrived home about an hour later to some very excited and happy dogs. They had clearly missed me and were happy to have me back and that's a great feeling. It also made me feel all the more committed to keeping Anika and her owner together because I know she feels the same about him.
Her vet appointment was Tuesday afternoon. The good news is that the vet reviewed the treatment records and history related by the owner and said that things were headed down the right path. The bad news is that we aren't there yet. The treatment that she had been given was appropriate and it had helped get the Cushings under control to some extent at least. But she clearly still has problems. Some of it may continue to improve under the current treatment regimen, but it's also entirely possible that she's got multiple problems and may need further testing and other treatments.
Fortunately, Anika is a sweet, easy, and cooperative with everything needed from her.
Anika was given a new medication, recently tested and soon to be released, that may help get the skin problem under control. She's flaky, itchy, and her coat is thin. Blood was drawn for testing and her skin was examined to determine if her problem is bacteria, yeast, or both. It may need to be cultured to determine if the antibiotics she's on are the right ones for what she's got.
It's possible that she could have underlying allergies, an autoimmune disorder, thyroid deficiency, or other problems.
The plan for now is to see how this new medication helps her skin condition to make her more comfortable and to see how the treatment for the Cushings disease progresses.
The owner has been to multiple vets with this dog and has already tried a variety of treatments, including allergy testing, allergy vaccines, food trials, etc.
It's likely that a lot more testing a treatments lie ahead, but thanks to everyone who has offered to help, we are moving on down that road.
The look in Anika's eyes as she looks at her owner here convinces me that it's the right thing to do.
If you have sent me an email indicating that you want to help Anika, I will be sending you an email with my mailing address. At this point it is tough to estimate how much the cost for this will run. With today's visit and recent medication from another vet, we are already over $600 and I'd say we are just getting started. I plan to track all contributions and all expenses and will make a pro rata refund of any unused contributions. If you have any questions, please ask me via email to vadogrescue@gmail.com. If you are PayPal users, our account there is cdhysell@gmail.com. Thank you.
