Breed analysis, Lexie and her pups

One of the puppy adopters had a genetic breed analysis done on one of the pups. The results came back today. I was particularly interested to see what it could tell us about Lexie.

The results showed that the puppy was 49% Chow, 25% Malamute, 24% Cattle Dog, and 2% Husky.

Fortunately, the test could distinguish which genes came from which parent. One was nothing but Chow, so that must have been the father because it sure isn't Lexie. That meant that Lexie contributed the malamute and cattle dog genes, and probably the little bit of husky as well. That's entirely believable from looking at Lexie.

Her coat is certainly similar in look and texture to the Australian Cattle Dog, it's coarse and rough. She's not built like a cattle dog though, they tend to be shorter and stockier, but that could certainly be explained by her being part malamute.

The test showed no genetic predisposition to any specific diseases (yay for healthy mutts!), but did indicate that they are likely to be big shedders. Being half Chow and a quarter Malamute, it's a safe bet that a lot of fur is in their future.

So that's all very interesting and I really appreciate the adopter doing the test and sharing the results. Now I have something to say when people ask me what kind of dog Lexie is. But the best answer is still that she's a good dog, a friendly, loving, outgoing, fun dog.
