Broadway Barks

Bernadette Peters coming out of the theatre
Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore sponsor an event called Broadway Barks. It happened to be today.  It is held in Shubert Alley just off Broadway in the heart of the theatre district. There were probably 15 or so local rescue groups in attendance, all with several dogs. There was also a large air conditioned van, about the size of a bus outfitted with built in cages for cats.

A beautiful harlequin Dane, one of several that were
there with the New York chapter of the
Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League
We didn't stay for the big event, which was going to be a parade of dogs with Bernadette and various other celebs. We didn't want to wait for that, we just walked around, saw the dogs, talked to the rescue folks, and bought some stuff to support them.
This is Chilly, he belongs to  Lori Pasternak of Helping Hands in Richmond.
He was in New York because he won a contest to be in a doggie wedding.
It was a surprise to see a dog I knew so far away from home.

The Great Dane rescue folks were there, with several HUGE Danes that made Gigi seem tiny. We talked to them and learned a new term - "teacup Dane" - which fits our girl perfectly.

I can not imagine having a group of shepherds in that mob scene, and I'm sure the dogs they brought were carefully chosen, but they all seemed to be doing well and enjoying it.

The rescue people seemed pretty much the same as those we see and work with at home; we are probably more alike than the dogs we rescue, foster, and adopt.
This little guy was just cute.

Later that afternoon, we stopped at a bar for a couple drinks before the show we were seeing that evening.  We sat at the bar and struck up a conversation with two guys sitting next to us and it turned out that they had put in an application to adopt one of the dogs they had seen that afternoon at Broadway Barks.  I gave them my email address and I hope to hear from them that they got the dog.
