The Twelfth Dog of Christmas

Dasher is his name. He came out of a shelter in North Carolina. He arrived here today after someone drove him up from NC who met a pilot named Barry, who flew him here to Charlottesville. Dasher (almost certainly not his original name), is said to be about eight months old. He weighed a mere 33 pounds when he was neutered yesterday. I would say that he's a well mixed dog, possibly including some flat coated retriever in the mix.

He's a sweet boy. We picked him up from the airport and went to see Clay's mother and her cat. Berta had company so he got to meet several ladies and liked them all. He was scared of the cat. Next we stopped at a brewery. It was early and we were the only people sitting outside, but he just settled down next to me where he felt safe and secure. We came home and he met the gang. That had to be very intimidating. When the Danish girls came over to greet him he first tried to climb back into the crate and then tried to hide under the van. I didn't allow that, of course, and he handled it very well. Our dogs were really very good with him. I've prepared a crate for him in the office, but for now he's sitting down in the front room with Clay and Arby. Dasher is available now through Promises Animal Rescue.

Dasher brings to 12 the number of dogs around here tonight. Here they are in order of seniority -- not age but tenure in our household: Maya, Max, Theo, Serena, Della, Arby, Journey, Chase, Winston, Kismet, Buzz, and Dasher. I've been bemoaning all the mud the dogs are tracking into the house and it certainly isn't drying up outside and probably won't until next summer, but what are you going to do. I can live with a dirty house, I can't live with the thought of not doing all I could.

Dasher and his pilot, Barry.

This is as close as Dasher got to the cat, then he (Dasher) jumped backwards.

He loved the ladies with gentle hands and treats.

He was scared crossing the street so I just picked him up and carried him.

Maya must think I'm crazy. She's not alone, I'm sure, and she's not wrong either.
