Bear came to us from North Carolina, getting out just ahead of the hurricane that devastated so much of that state. He was very unsure of himself in the beginning. He was less than a year old and didn't appear to have had any training or even much experience with people and other dogs. Bear has grown up a lot in his time in foster care. He has filled out his gangly frame and now looks like a well put together German Shepherd Dog. He has almost grown on his ears, but they will always look big on him, because they are.
Bear came just before we went on vacation so he spent his first two weeks with a great foster home with other dogs who began teaching him the ropes. Once he came here he had both Bailey and Norman as full time mentors and a continuously changing variety of other dogs so he has learned to interact appropriately. He learned how to play and who he can and can't play with. He's been good with using a crate and he's generally good indoors, but he still has a puppy's tendency to get into things when he's not being watched.
Bear had zero experience leash walking and he pulled like a beast on our first hike. The next time I put a Gentle Leader on him and he didn't fight it. With that equipment he walked right next to me better than many dogs I've had who have had a lot more training. Establishing control enabled him to relax and we both actually enjoyed the walk. Bear likes to run in the pasture with the other dogs, but he's easy to recall and is always happy to come back inside.
Bear has been neutered, vaccinated, and has tested negative for heartworms. He is available for adoption through Green Dogs Unleashed.
