Leo finds a friend

Even though no one is holding adoption events, rescue work has not come to a halt. I've been slow rolling Leo through the system, not pushing for a quick adoption because I wanted to put some weight on him and delay his neuter as long as possible. When he first arrived he didn't look so bad but if you felt him you could tell he was mostly a skeleton covered with long hair. He's been through two rounds of de-worming now. I hit him hard with five days of Panacure and repeated it three weeks later. He's been eating four cups of food twice a day. He's still lean and needs to put on a few pounds, but now when you feel his rib cage you feel some meat covering those ribs under that long hair.

I've scheduled his neuter for next Tuesday. Leo has had a lot of interest and many applications, including several very good ones. That makes it hard to choose and I had procrastinated making that decision, like I do many others. There were several applicants who could have given Leo a good home. One of the hardest parts of rescue is choosing among them but he's only one dog and can go to only one home. I finally went through the approved applications, narrowed it down to two and then finally, made a decision.

They came up to meet Leo today and brought their shepherd along to meet him as well. Her name is Maya. She's about 1.5 years old and very well trained. Leo needs a playmate and he also needs a role model, and he needs a lot of training. She can handle him, she can teach him, and the humans can too. These folks, and their dog, can provide all that Leo needs to grow into a very fine dog.

The two dogs hit it off instantly. I always tell people you shouldn't expect an instant connection, dogs need to get acquainted just like people do. But, it's nice when that instant connection does happen and it sure did with Leo and Maya. They took to playing immediately and rarely stopped all the time they were here. Leo was really sorry to see Maya leave and I wish I could explain that he's going to see her again, probably next weekend if his neuter surgery and recovery goes well.

That's my granddog! She is such a sweet dog and is very gentle. Leo is lucky to have a big sister that will show him the ropes and still have fun in the large back yard as well!

I know what you mean about not always having an insta-connection. However, these two I think may have it! So glad to read such happy news!!
