Four becomes two

The good news is that the four dogs I thought I was getting today were actually only two.  One of the dogs that didn't come apparently has an interested person.  The other is still on a stray hold.  Two dogs are better than four when they are incoming.

One of the dogs that did arrive today is this guy, a mostly black, mostly shepherd pup with a few white toes and a white star on his chest.  He's still just a pup, maybe nine months old, and completely wild and untrained.  That's why they gave him up.  Apparently the owners didn't realize that they grow up wild unless you exercise and train them, and even then, they are young and wild for at least two years before they begin to settle down.  It also never occurred to them to neuter the boy.  It has occurred to me.

The good news is that he's sweet, friendly, young, healthy, active.  The great news is that I may have someone interested in fostering him.  He has no name and I'm going to just leave that up to the new foster home if they take him.

I put him in a kennel with Rocky, who promptly kicked his young butt, but after that they've been fine together.

The other dog who came today is a sweet girl.  She's older, the paperwork says five, but I'd say seven.  However, she's just had a litter of puppies and must have outlived her usefulness to the breeder.  She was found as a stray but her owners were known and were notified, but they didn't come for her.  She will be better off without them.

She also has no name.  She needs to be spayed of course, but the more immediate need is to see a vet about one of her feet.  I can't really describe it, and I can't tell if it's an injury or a growth, but something isn't right.  She's not lame, however, and walks on it just fine.

I set up a new kennel for the new girl, filled it with fresh straw, and she seems content.  She's a pretty girl, but motherhood has been tough on her and she needs some R&R, a spa treatment, and some good food.  She is friendly and very human-focused.  She's going to be a very devoted dog.

No word yet on the Nelson County dog, maybe tomorrow.
