The Joy of Dog

Diamond got spayed today, putting an end to her career as a cash cow for the human garbage that exploited her for the money she could earn for them by pumping out puppies rather than getting a job themselves. She's a big, solid girl and I have no doubt that she was a good mother, but she was the result of bad breeding herself and should never have been used in this way. Even worse, she was deprived of the simple joy of being a dog.

These pictures were taken late Tuesday afternoon. After a day of rain the clouds broke and we had a half hour of sunshine before the sun with down. I took the foster Danes, (Diamond, Karma, and Cinderella), our Danes (Della and Sweet Serena), and two of our shepherds (Theo and Max), out to the pasture to enjoy a run in the sun.

Diamond and Theo
Maybe it was because they had been together before, or maybe it was just because they were all tired of being cooped up inside for the day, but everyone ran and played together in a way I hadn't seen. I noted yesterday that the white Danes and the shepherds hadn't mixed much when they ran together. That wasn't the case yesterday. Max is still pretty independent but even he followed us around and occasionally crossed paths with the others. Della and Cinderella were sizing each other up for some Dane play. Even Serena, who usually avoids running anywhere near the mower, was out among us and joining in the play.

The most active, however, was the senior girl, Diamond. She was in front of the mower the entire time we were out there, soaking in the sun and the simple joy of running in the open. She's not going to be running for a while now since she just had surgery today. She's indoors tonight and will remain inside until she's adopted. She has a lot of walks in her future and that's really what she needs.

This shows the slope of the pasture; running uphill gives a
lot of exercise. I ride the mower.
