Ten, but who's counting

We crossed back over to double digits today with the arrival of Kaiya, bringing us to a total of ten dogs (I don't count the seven puppies).

Kaiya came from Page County, where she first became known to us on the county sheriff's Facebook page. She had been found chained and padlocked to a barbed wire fence, unable to move. The county animal control officer rescued her and they attempted to locate an owner, who presumably would have been charged. No owner was found and unsurprisingly none came forward so eventually this dog, who they were calling Kaiya was released to Green Dogs.

She looks to me to be a mixed breed containing a lot of German Shepherd genes. I'm not sure why the name Kaiya was chosen. The name means "forgiveness" and being a dog, I expect that she is a forgiving sort. As the saying goes, "to err is human, to forgive is canine." Given what happened to her, I would not be forgiving. So here we are.

She is a bit overwhelmed and intimidated by everything around here, but she's handling it very well. Kaiya has met everyone here except Holly and has been fine with everyone. I'm sure we'll see more of her true personality in coming days but what I've seen so far seems great. Welcome Kaiya.

This is the chain she was on, shown here clinging to the animal control officer who rescued her after being freed from the barbed wire fence. This tells me a lot about the dog.
