About the names:

I had to do some research (on YouTube) because I was too old to remember the first movie and too old to have seen the second. Credit to Clay for the naming scheme.

In Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Burl Ives version), an elf named Hermey who doesn't want to be a toymaker is ostracized from the elf group for being "different." (Clay maintains that every young gay boy identifies with Hermey and believes him to be queer, and honestly he does look like a twink.) Rudolph is similarly ostracized and even rejected by his own father and that fat fuck Santa because he has a flaming red nose that he's unable to conceal. (This one doesn't even require any explanation.)

So Rudolph and Hermey team up and leave the small town in Kansas where they grew up, make that the North Pole, and strike off on their own. They meet up with a prospector/adventurer named Yukon Cornelius and together they end up on the Island of Misfit Toys. This place is presided over by a handsome lion called King Moonracer, who gathered all the toys that were unwanted by children because they were "different" in various ways.

In the 2001 sequel, they return to the island and to nearby Castaway Cove where they meet additional characters, including the benevolent (drag) Queen Camilla. There are a few other plot points, but eventually Santa finds homes for all the "special" toys with someone who will love them.

Now, the parallels to the world of rescue in general and to our own household in particular are readily apparent. These pups will all be loved and adopted, as will their mother, Holly, but they are starting out life here with our merry band of misfits.

We are all misfits in our own way. I am blond haired green eyed Caucasian middle class American woman and I can definitely relate with the misfits. I have one of your former misfits and am thankful every day for the joy he brings us. (Marshall adopted 2/2021)
