"Nothing but smiles"

I took Padme to a new foster home on Monday. It's a foster-to-adopt situation if all goes well. The primary factor in determining if all goes well is a wild little beagle. He likes to play and had a male Doberman playmate in the past. He wasn't quite sure what to make of Padme and she was the same, but they both seemed to want it to work out.

They sized up and scouted each other, made a few initial tries at play. Tolerances were tested. They weren't best friends immediately, in fact when I left he seemed scared of her and wished she would go away. But she didn't go away and the next morning things were better. By the next evening they were better still. That's actually quite a fast turnaround. I've never made friends with anyone that quickly.

This girl made friends with everyone around here. She really made an effort at it. She and Bailey played, she and Mercy played, and she even got Bette to play with her and Bette is not really inclined to make dog friends. In spite of all she had gone through, Padme remained a fundamentally nice, friendly girl with people and dogs. Her attitude shows on her face, which the new foster described as "nothing but smiles."

She still has a long way to go and a lot to learn, but I think she's off to a great start.
